  1. Thanks for continuing to provide me with information on this. At the moment, Sidekick doesn't appear to be working at all. As noted above, I had installed CB Pro 2024 through the desktop app. My version is currently showing as 24.0.0.823. However, there wasn't a new folder created for CB 2024, and the executable is in the CB 2023 folder, as you can see from the screenprint below. Trying to run Sidekick from that executable doesn't successfully launch anything. Please let me know if I should attempt a clean install of either CB 2023 or CB 2024.
  2. I'm sorry to have to cycle back around to my original problem. But, despite deleting it multiple times, the "ComicBase Database" keeps popping back up on my list of databases. This database is always the default Database when adding new comics through the mobile app, even if I'm viewing my own database when I go to add. So, I've three times added a bunch of comics to the wrong database, after successfully removing all the databases but one and later having "ComicBase Database" appear again. Is there a way to prevent this from continuing to show up on my list? Thanks, Kenny
  3. I just ran a new collection report, and here is the appropriate section of the report. It shows that two new issues were added, matching what I see on the database. Kenny
  4. Yes, that sounds right, though I've only added new comics with the default "NM" condition and an already existing copy of a lower condition, so I don't know if it would be the same if I added a "VF". Kenny
  5. Sorry for the slow reply. I'm attaching some screen prints that may help. The situation is that I already have a comic book in my database with a grade other than NM (in this case Space Family Robinson #40 with a grade of 4.0). I add a new copy of the same issue on the mobile app with a different grade (NM in this case). Then I load my new purchases through the computer app. The result, as shown in the screenshot, is that I end up with three comics in the database, the original CGD 4.0 comic, and a NM comic with a quantity of TWO. It feels like what happens is that the CGC 4.0 record got copied, with a quantity of one, and then that got incremented to a quantity of two. Of course, this isn't correct, as I've only added one new comic. Also, it looks like the "price" of the CGC 4.0 comic is copied as well, so that the new NM comic does not have the correct value associated with it. I also noticed that the yearly price history for the 4.0 comic is actually the price history for a NM comic and isn't scaled by the condition, but maybe that is intentional? The screenshots show that the total quantity before the add was one (on the report, sorry I didn't screen print the computer app before I got started), the screen on the mobile app I used to do the addition, and the final result after the new issues were loaded. Let me know if you need any other information. I should add that this behavior is consistent, occurring every time I add a new comic through the mobile app of a different condition than an a comic I already own. Thanks, Kenny
  6. Thanks, that seemed to fix that issue. However, in entering this batch of comics, I found another bug. Whenever I add a comic that I already have a copy of it and the new comic is of a different grade from the old comic, it sets the quantity of the new grade to two, rather than one. Thanks, Kenny
  7. Hi, I don't know if there's been an update to the mobile app, but prior to just recently, when I added comics to my collection on the mobile app, I never had to select the database. I only have one database for all of my comics. Now, however, when I add comics, the database is defaulted to ComicBase Database, and if I don't change it to my actual database, then the desktop app doesn't recognize them as new purchases and won't add them to my collection. Furthermore, even if I change the database, it reverts as soon as I go to add another item, so I have to change the database for every single item I'm adding. I tried updating to ComicBase 2024 on the desktop app, but the behavior is the same with either version of the desktop app. This is a major difficulty, as there's no way to tell when I accidentally forget to change the database, since, AFAIK, there's no way to view pending purchases waiting to be added to your collection. Thanks, Kenny
  8. Thanks for the update. I'm still a little confused, as I don't know why you have to upload a Report to the web in order to test the search functionality for non-comics. If the two are related somehow, then perhaps the problem is that I've never uploaded a collection report for anything but comics. I'm a little surprised that bar code scanning isn't one of the primary ways to enter comics. Since bar code scanning doesn't show you whether you already own any copies, what is it supposed to be used for? I suppose looking up values is another use, but that's about all that's left. Entering issues through the desktop app can be easier in some cases but has several drawbacks. The main problem comes when you don't know which series a comic comes from. I know my Avengers well enough to know which volume a particular issue likely comes from but the same can't be said for Amazing Spider-Man, or Thor, or Punisher, or...So, if I try to enter them through the desktop app, I have to hunt around for the right volume based on either opening up the (usually bagged) comic book to get the year, or by referencing the bar code numbers which are usually higher for later years. Either way, I often have to open up multiple different volumes to find the right one, if I'm on the desktop. And for variant covers, I end up having to look at barcodes for sure, as I don't have cover images on the desktop (I think I need to upgrade to get all of those.) Scanning with the barcode instantly finds the right volume and (almost always) the right cover. Barcode scanning also works great for virgin covers, when I would have to open up the comic book for sure to figure out what series and issue number it is. Barcode scanning is also quite a bit faster, especially when I only have a few items from each series. And there are times when I don't have my computer available. I would definitely be curious if you've ever surveyed your users on what they use the barcode scanner for and what their preferred methods for issue entry are. Perhaps my method is more unusual than I would have thought. In any case, I appreciate you continuing to listen to my rambling. I hope to get the rest of my titles corrected soon and then I might have questions on how to map the variant covers over for the unknown comics that aren't due to title changes. Kenny
  9. Thanks again for all the information. I'll start going through all of the changes. A quick comment in regard to my third question, about the mobile app. My question had nothing to do with collection reports. If I use the mobile app, and choose the "item lookup" option, I can't find any series that is marked as a magazine or a book. If I use the bar code scanner, I can find a book, but the one time I tried to add an item that way it caused a bunch of database errors which still haven't completely gone away. (I started a separate topic about this issue.) So I can't, for example, add new issues of Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe or see the ones that I currently own that have now been converted to magazines. Note that the mobile app does not show any of the unknown items that we've been talking about. This doesn't surprise me as the mobile app likely pulls search results from some master copy of the database other than my personal copy, and I have no idea where the mobile app gets quantity data from. Kenny
  10. One of the huge time sinks in maintaining a large collection is sorting new purchases into the existing collection. It would be so much easier if I could just put new purchases into long boxes as I entered them into the database. So, if the database stored the date/time of entry and allowed me to view it, I could always find any comic book in my collection just by looking at the entry date and labeling my boxes by the dates the comics were added. This might be a little trickier with items with multiple quantities, but I'm pretty sure you already support being able to add multiple copies of an issue with different grades, so I'm guessing it would be possible to store a different entry date for each one. If this were added, it would be nice to be able to run a report sorted in date entry order and specify date ranges as well. Kenny
  11. Ok, I appreciate all of this information. I might post something to the feature suggestions about this, as it doesn't feel like I should have to do manual corrections every time the name of a title is corrected. Putting that aside for now, though, I have some further issues before proceeding with the clean-up. It appears like collection reports will only show items of one particular type (comics, magazines, books) Does that mean, now that items like the Marvel Handbook have been changed from comics to magazines, that I will have to create at least three collection reports and refer to all three when trying to determine what issues I own? The desktop app has all the various types but only because I added the other types to my most recent update. My database size has more than doubled and is now over 4 GB!!! Does this mean I now have to start keeping all the types in my database, and downloading updates for all of them, etc.? My mobile app is not able to pull up anything that isn't a comic book. Do I need to update my mobile app? I have a separate thread opened because I have at least one database error due to trying to add a book from my mobile app (which happened when I was able to barcode scan a "book"), but I can't get any books or magazines through the item lookup functionality. I made my first attempt to change the type from comics to magazines. The issues did get transferred over, but it did create duplicate issue numbers for all issues. Further, some of the cover prices matched and some didn't. (I transferred Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe (Vol. 1)). I'm not too worried about the cover prices, but which one do I delete? There's clearly an extra database key allowing duplicate rows of the same issue number, and I want to be sure the row I keep will be modified if future updates are applied. Does this mean I have to transfer the quantities to the pre-existing issue rows and delete the rows that just got added? Changing the type only works as described in #4 if the names match. Image+ doesn't have the same name, so it just created an Image+ magazine. Since it's only one issue, I'm assuming I can just add the issue to Image+ Vol 1, delete the issue from Image+ and then Image+ will be blown away when I next "remove obsolete" during update. The second half of the listing in my post shows the specific issues that are unknown. All of the unknown titles have at least one issue that I own, probably due to the fact that I do, in fact, choose the "remove obsolete" option when I do my updates. Which leads to: The Dr. Who FCBD issue is from 2016 James Bond 3rd Series is from Dynamite, 2018 Project Superpowers 2nd Series is also from Dynamite, 2018 Vision: Director's Cut is from Marvel, 2017. I'm pretty sure this one maps to Vision (2nd Series), although the issue number maps from 1/A to CS 1/A I don't see a difference between the old and the new "That Darn Cat..." but I think I can get it mapped correctly anyway Zane Grey’s Stories of the West does not map to Four Color Comics. This was the series that followed after Four Color Comics. However, I'm pretty sure it maps to Stories of the West (Zane Grey's...) My Image+ issue is cover dated 9/2016, so I'm going to assume it maps to Image+ Vol 1 I think that's all for now. The listing in my original post included all of the titles and issues that were in the report of unknowns. Kenny
  12. My last update...maybe... Thanks to the other thread I opened, I have verified that I can double click on other "books" to open them up and change quantities. However, the above described book continues to give me a database error when I try to open the book to modify the quantity. This isn't much help since it doesn't give the keys or the table name, but the stack trace for the error is below. ************** Exception Text ************** System.InvalidCastException: Conversion from type 'DBNull' to type 'Single' is not valid. at Microsoft.VisualBasic.CompilerServices.Conversions.ToSingle(Object Value, NumberFormatInfo NumberFormat) at ProjectX.Book.ReadSQLProperties(SQLiteDataReader reader) at ProjectX.Book..ctor(Int32 ID) at ProjectX.FrmMain.VB$StateMachine_306_AlbumItem_Clicked.MoveNext() --- End of stack trace from previous location where exception was thrown --- at System.Runtime.ExceptionServices.ExceptionDispatchInfo.Throw()
  13. Ok, sorry to keep updating this, but I seem to finally be solving my own problems. It looks like this item is listed as a "book" even though it has the form of a comic book, and the content is a bunch of comic book covers. This doesn't really explain why the barcode scanner was able to find it when my mobile app doesn't seem to know about books in general, but it does explain the different view shown above and the fact that I can't generate a collection report from there. Should this be classified as a comic book? I will leave that to you to decide, although I think "yes" since it's published by Marvel and clearly in comic book form. It's certainly as much a comic book as Marvel Age was. By the way, I'm unable to add this item, even as a book, from the desktop app. If I click on the particular version, I get an "unhandled exception" database error. Do I have to have a separate database for books? Kenny
  14. Hi, I don't know if you prefer feature suggestions for the mobile app to go here or in the main feature suggestions forum, but I'm glad to move this posting if desired. I use the mobile app a lot and have several suggestions. 1. Add the ability to jump to a particular issue number when viewing a series. Scrolling down to the current issues of Action Comics, or to, for example, Issue 1200 of Four Color Comics is really annoying, especially as only 50 entries at a time are loaded. I've tried entering the issue number in the search field, but that has several problems. First, you have to type the full name of the series exactly as it appears (e.g. "Amazing Spider-Man, The (Series 1) 300"), second this pops you straight into the issue number, so you have to go back and put in a new number if you want to get to another issue, and third and most importantly, you don't get to see how many issues you own when you go straight into an issue number. This last is also a problem when you're doing barcode scanning, that you don't get to see how many issues you already own. 2. The most important information, at least in my view, is the picture (to verify that I have the right variant), the number of issues I already own and the value. The picture is always available both when viewing the series list and when viewing individual issues. However, the other two are more of a problem. As mentioned in item 1, the quantity owned is only shown in the series view, and therefore can't be seen when pulling up an individual issue directly from a barcode scan or from the search field. And there isn't anyway to get from the individual issue page to the series page for that issue. Conversely, the value is only available on the issue page, so you have to click each issue from the series page to see the value. Furthermore, the value often can't be seen due to the lengthy notes associated with the issue. As there is no scroll bar for the notes, the only one I've found to see the value in those cases is to long click in the notes area to open up "copy" selectors, then drag one of them down until the value shows up. My own preference would be for the value to show up on the series list screen where the quantity shows and for the quantity owned to also show up on the individual comic page. 3. As far as I know, there's no way to see the purchases you've just entered. I am often entering a lot of comics and am unsure if I entered a particular one. Since the quantities don't update immediately on the app, and the purchases aren't visible anywhere, the only recourse is to load the purchases into the desktop app, then compare the current quantities to some report which hopefully I generated just before loading the purchases. Yes, it would be really nice to be able to see a report of recent purchases loaded in the desktop app. On the mobile app, it would be great to be able to see and edit "pending" quantities. 4. Item Lookup improvements. Item look ups can still be difficult at times. One thing that would be really helpful is to show the series years or at least the first year in the series search results list. I am often trying to add, for example, Punisher #6 and don't know which series it's from, but I do know what year. Currently I have to just start randomly choosing series numbers, opening them up, clicking on the first comic on the series to look at the publication year and then decide if that sounds about right for the issue I'm actually looking to add. The other improvement I would love to see would be able to put in partial search strings to find series faster. comicbookrealm.com has a pretty awesome search capability in this regard. You can type in "unc x" or "amaz spi" or "ult fan" or whatever and it does what you would want it too. I probably have some more suggestions for both the mobile app and the desktop app, but these are the ones that would help the most. Thanks, Kenny
  15. After running the most recent software and content updates, I noticed for the first time a link for unrecognized items. This might have been available for a while, but this is the first time I noticed it. When I clicked on the link, I got a fairly lengthy list of unknown items. Some of it seems to be series that have been renamed, though others there's no noticeable difference between two names. Most of the individual comics are either from an unknown series, or are variant covers that maybe have been renamed, but there are a few items that seem to be normal issue numbers from series that aren't marked as unknown. Since I've only entered comics directly through the desktop or mobile software, how do I have unknown items? Am I supposed to manually correct these? If there's already instructions on this somewhere, please point me to them, as I was unable to find any. I'm including the full list below to provide some examples. 16. Ok, I don't know if I fixed the problem or not. I updated my desktop app, once to update the software and once to pull in new titles. I was now able to import the purchases. This particular title is now one of the titles I can find. However, if I open the title up to see if the import work, I get the (new?) stamp album view and I can't tell if I own a copy or not. If I try to run a collection report from there, I get an error saying that no items match my selection criteria. Curiously, if I view one of my other series, the view is the normal view that I'm used to seeing, and I can successfully create a collection report. Also, I still can't find the title on my mobile app when I search by name. Kenny
  17. I have an item that I scanned on the mobile app. I was unable to find the comic when searching by name, but scanning the barcode was successful and I added it that way. However, when I go to download new purchases, I now get an error message stating that the item can't be found and none of my new purchases get loaded. I have tried removing the new purchase by adding it again with a -1 in the amount but that didn't fix the problem. I have attached a picture of both the bar code, and the item as it is pulled up in the mobile app. At this stage, I would be happy to just know how to remove this item from my purchases so I can download the rest of the purchases, then later deal with this item's status in the database. Kenny
  18. Ok, thanks, that does seem a like an easier way to do it. Where am I supposed to put the picture and what is the naming convention for it? Does the picture need to be cropped, or a particular size? I'd like to contribute to expanding the database, but I have probably hundreds of comics that are not in the database, so I'm still deciding if it's worth the effort. Kenny
  19. I assume "create the issue in your database" means to use "Items...New Comic Book", but what does "add to the appropriate image folder" mean?
  20. The instructions here (https://comicbase.com/mycb/Article.aspx?N=16) state "To submit corrections or additions, just highlight the issues in question, right-click, and choose “Submit new or corrected data” from that menu that appears." There are no instructions on adding a new item. Are those instructions elsewhere? Can a new item be added from the mobile app?
  21. This may have been covered elsewhere, but I wasn't able to quickly find an answer. I have a growing set of variant covers that aren't included in the list of covers. Is there a quick way to submit them for addition? I don't have the time to research or input all of the information needed to add the cover, but want to at least flag it as missing. The "add new content" only works for changing an already existing entry. Ideally I'd like to be able to just snap a picture of the front (and back if the barcode info is there) on my phone and submit it through the phone app, but I'm willing to submit through the web or computer app. I also have a growing stack of comics which don't seem to have an entry at all. Is this the right forum to find out if I'm just not looking under the right title names? Thanks, Kenny
