  1. This week's update added the title Marvel Art Of Michael Turner, The.  Should the "Of" should really be "of" to be in keeping with CB's adopted style standard?

Similarly, should Cap’n Crunch In The Center Of The Earth really be Cap’n Crunch in the Center of the Earth ?  There are several other titles this week with similar capitalizations, such as (but not necessarily limited to):
    • Driving The Torture Track
    • Fire Puts The Squeeze On Mr. Halfinsured
    • Beware The Booby Trap

Another capitalization situation, but this one is a little different:  the "K" in Motherfu*Kin Monsters: The Horizon Expiriement should really be lowercase since it is in the middle of the word.  Also, "Experiment" is spelled incorrectly, so I think that the correct title should be Motherfu*kin Monsters: The Horizon Experiment .

  2. I recently received a copy of the latest printing of Incredible Hulk Epic Collection vol. 1.  The indicia in my copy states that it is "third edition, first printing".  I am going to submit it as #1-C, reserving #1-B for "second edition" issues since I *assume* those exist.  LMK if this isn't the proper way forward.

BTW, the notes field for issue #1 of this series could use some clean-up as there is a lot of repeated information in there.

  3. CB 2025 updated its formulas for determining the values of certain comics, particularly those that were and were not seeing big surges in value when placed inside a CGC holder. Depending on the particular comics in your collection, this may be the cause of your collection’s change in total value. There was a recent Livestream on this, you can get a more detailed explanation there. (I think it was in the show that discussed the debut of CB 2025… try episode #180)

Not sure what to make of the “scrambled” collection statistics without knowing more specifics about what changed in your report and the contents of your collection.

  4. This week's update added the title Uncle Scrooge: Duck Tales-Messes Become Successes.  Is that the correct type of dash that should be used for this title?  (I'm thinking that it should be an em dash)

Similar question for the comic title Alberta-Land of Freedom and Opportunity that was added this week.  Should that be an em dash there as well?

The update deleted The Magic Order 5 and replaced it with The Magic Order VI.  "VI" is the Roman numeral for "6" not "5", so my spidey-sense is tingling here.  I don't have my copy in hand yet, but I suspect that the indicia for this issue is might actually be "The Magic Order V #1".  Can somebody verify?

  5. The database contains two entries for the Heroes, Heavies, & Heroines portfolio.

One of these listings is under the Comic Book media category, and that title should be deleted because this is a portfolio rather than a comic book.

The title listed under the Book category should be retained, but some changes are necessary.  Right now it is listed as #0 with a TPB binding.  The binding type should be changed to LL (loose leaf).  I assume that the number can be dropped since most books aren't listed with the number "0" when they are not part of a series (and, as far as I know, this item was not part of a series).

  6. UPDATE:  I have submitted information for the new 2024 editions of Marvel Masterworks: The Avengers vol. 2 and Marvel Masterworks: The Incredible Hulk vol. 1.  They were entered as follows:

    •  Marvel Masterworks: The Avengers #2/D for the silver & black dustjacket edition (somebody else will need to submit a cover scan and a UPC number)

    •  Marvel Masterworks: The Avengers #2/E for the marble dustjacket edition

    •  Marvel Masterworks: The Incredible Hulk #1/D for the silver & black dustjacket edition (somebody else will need to submit a cover scan and a UPC number)

    •  Marvel Masterworks: The Incredible Hulk #1/E for the marble dustjacket edition

  7. This week's update added Art of Marvel's Snap to the Comic Book category.  Is this a comic or is this a book?  Based on the title, I suspect it is the latter.

Also added was the comic title BTTM FDRS (Fant
I suspect that this title was somehow truncated and that it should really be BTTM FDRS (Fantagraphics) .   However, I don't see any other BTTM FDRS titles in the database, so including the publisher in the title name might not be necessary.

The title Spider-Man by David Michelinie & Mark Bagely was added, but it contains a misspelling.  It should really be Spider-Man by David Michelinie & Mark Bagley .

  8. Also, sometime over the last couple of weeks, it looks like two reprintings of Betty & Me #16 have ended up in the database.

I submitted #16 (2nd printing) a couple of weeks ago, and that listing is in the database and appears to be correct.

There is also a #16 Variation A in the database with a cover price of $3.99 (which matches the August 2024 facsimile edition that I submitted) but with a September 1992 cover date.  I am not able to find evidence that this issue was reprinted in September 1992, so I suspect that this is an erroneous listing of the 8/2024 facsimile edition.

I propose deleting Betty & Me #16/A from the database.

  9. This week's update added the title Frank Cho - Muse.  First, the title doesn't have the correct type of dash punctuation.  Second, and more importantly, I suspect that this is a duplication of Muse (Monkey Boy) since Monkey Boy Press is a publisher name that Cho has used for at least some of his self-published artbooks.  And, finally, even if this *is* supposed to be its own separate title, I can't get it to show up on Atomic Avenue.

Also added was Paul Kupperberg’s Illustrated Guide To Writing Comics.  To conform with CB's naming standards, should that title be Illustrated Guide to Writing Comics (Paul Kupperberg's...) ?

Adam, How do I do this without a scanner?  I typed in the UPC in the search box and it didn't do anything.

If the comic is in your database, then typing the full UPC code (don't worry about putting in spaces, but don't skip *any* of the numbers) and hitting return should take directly to that specific issue.  But if the comic isn't in your database, then typing the UPC into the search box won't get you any hits.

If you rebuilt your lists and then downloaded the most recent content update (made available on 8/21/2024) and the Star Wars: Inquisitors comic still isn't showing up in your database, you might want to reach out to support for assistance.

  11. It could also be that there was an issue with the scanner that was used to make the image being used in the database.

Fred’s description of his copy seems to match the scan on mycomicshop so I suspect that the image used in the CB/AA database should be replaced with something more representative of what this comic actually looks like.

FYI, I tried to submit this by right clicking Submit New or Corrected Data, but that line is grayed out.

Did you have the specific issue highlighted before trying to use the Submit New Or Corrected Data function?  If no issue(s) in the title are highlighted, then the function will be grayed out in the menu.

Oh, I suggested that the Playboy calendar be moved to Magazines. I haven't added or inventoried any calendars, so that was an assumption based on the idea that many calendars are a kind of periodical, with new editions coming out annually. But certainly it should be moved to Books if that's where other calendars are categorized. I should have checked.

Yes, the Book category is where calendars go.  There is even a “Calendar” binding type in that category! 😎

  14. This week's content update added the title Horror & Fantasy Illustrated 20240 Pinup Special to the Comic Book category.  First, that should probably be indexed as Horror & Fantasy Illustrated 2024 Pinup Special.  Second, if this is a pin-up book, this might be better suited for the Magazine category. Can anybody verify how much of this item is pin-ups and how much is comic stories?

Also, the title Playboy Playmate Wall Calendar was moved from the Comics category to the Magazine category.  I agree that it doesn't belong in the Comics category, but it is my understanding that calendars are supposed to go into the Books category.

  15. The following entries under the Marvel Graphic Novel title have incorrect cover dates.  I don't know offhand what the correct dates are, but the ones that are listed are definitely inaccurate since they predate the launch of the Marvel Graphic Novel line.

    •  #4 (5th printing) -- should not be 11/76
    •  #8 -- should not be 11/76
    •  #9 -- should not be 11/76
    •  #11 -- should not be 11/76
    •  #14 -- should not be 11/76
    •  #18 -- should be sometime prior to 8/95... not sure of the correct date but the first print definitely came out in the mid 80's sometime
    •  #18 -- 3rd and 4th printings both list 1/85... I doubt that both printings came out in the same month. EDITED TO ADD: It is entirely possible that the cover date wasn't changed in the indicia for the later printings, so I readily concede that these cover dates might not be incorrect.

  16. The indicia for the book isn't set up quite as explicitly as it is for most periodical comics, but having said that, I can verify that the indicia refers to the book as Atlas Artist Edition.  So the Joe Maneely book should be listed as Book #1/HC or #1/HC under the title Atlas Artist Edition.

And I can verify Douglas' assertion that this a book whose contents are primarily reprints of complete comic stories so this does belong in the Comics media category.

"There are too many of these items on sale in Atomic Avenue."

To the best of my knowledge, that has never been a rationale for not correcting a title in the database.  (It is possible, however, that an Atomic Avenue seller has discovered that something in their inventory is suddenly not recognized on AA and they send in a correction that undoes a previous correction... and thus re-establishing an incorrect title.)

18 hours ago, Fred Slota said:

Take the time to plan a path to clean up all these legacy issues.  Maybe create a new, second set of Title and Issue fields, Title2 and Issue2.  Search by both, list with both.  Allow the user to choose which set to use for viewing and reports, while officially using the original form on Atomic Avenue for a year or two.  Then, after a period of supporting both old and new designations, rename Title/Issue to Title (old)/Issue (old) and rename Title2/Issue2 to Title/Issue.

What I have suggested in the past is to have the content update process take care of moving a user's inventory from an outgoing incorrect title to a newly created corrected title.  The response from @Peter Bickford was "we don't want to mess with any of our users' data."  But it should be easy enough to set up a request of the user to make these changes.  What I envision is something along these lines:

    1.  Existing title Capt. Coprolite has been in the database for years.  It is discovered that the indicia actually reads as Captain Coprolite.

    2.  The next content update includes code to add the new, correct Captain Coprolite title to the database and delete the old title (assuming the user's content update preferences are set to allow deletion of old titles that contain no inventory).

    3.  During the update process, if the user has inventory in the old title, they receive the following dialog box:
This content update has added the comic book [or whatever media type] title Captain Coprolite to your database.  This title is intended to replace the incorrectly named Capt. Coprolite.  Would you like to move all of the issue information (including your inventory) from the old Capt. Coprolite title to the new Captain Coprolite title?
[_] Yes, please move my issue and inventory information from the old title to the new title.
[_] No, please leave my issue and inventory information in the old title.

    4.  If the user selects "yes" then the update proceeds to carry out the task.  At the end of the update, the user gets a pop-up that reminds them to update their AA inventory if they had any issues under the old title for sale on AA.
If the user selects "no" then the update leaves their data under the old title unchanged, the new title is created, and the user gets a pop-up at the end of the update reminding them that any issues from the old title that they had for sale on AA won't be recognized by the system but that this can be fixed by moving their inventory to the new title and updating their AA inventory.

Something similar could also be set up to handle titles that move from one media category to another.

The main upshot of this suggestion is that users will spend less time curating their databases and thus have more time to curate their collections.  As it should be.  IMO the biggest shortcoming of ComicBase is that it essentially places the onus of moving inventory from old, outgoing titles to new, correct titles on the user.  This creates work for the user through no fault of their own.  This is something that could be handled by the program during content updates on an opt-in basis as described above.
