  1. This update added the comic title Cottage Classics: Their Makers* & The Making.  I see that there is a link to an Amazon product listing in the title description.  Is that intentional?

There is also an outside link in the title description for Das Kampf.  Again, is this intentional?  @Mark J. Castaneda @Peter Bickford  Is there an official editorial policy regarding links to places outside of ComicBase and Atomic Avenue within the title descriptions?

  2. To the extent that the conventions adopted by IMDB matter to what conventions CB has adopted, I would point out that IMDB doesn't move "The" or any other articles to the end of their titles.

Just because "El" is part of the name of a place, that doesn't mean that it should exempted from CB's style conventions.  "The" is part of the name of "The Grand Canyon," and if there were a book or comic entitled "The Grand Canyon" I would expect that the CB editors would file that title under "G" rather than "T".

Your point about Los Angeles is relevant, however, and it does suggest that maintaining consistency of the CB conventions would require that the existing title Los Angeles Ink Stains should be filed under "A" rather than "L".  Thoughts on this @Mark J. Castaneda @Peter Bickford ?

  3. The first of these books is entitled "The Bus" (with no volume number) but the second one is entitled "The Bus 2", so it would make sense to move them into the same title.

  4. The convention that ComicBase has adopted is that returns to the numbering of an earlier series get those issues filed under the older title.  That's not what I would have chosen to do, but that is what the folks at ComicBase decided to do quite some years ago.

I agree in general, but in this case (if it's what I'm thinking of), "El Dorado" is a proper name, in that it's the title of the movie this comic adapts.

Comic adaptations of movies that begin with an article still get the article moved to the end.  For example, Marvel's adaptation of The Deep is listed in the database as "Deep, The".  By that same convention, El Dorado should be listed as "Dorado, El".

Now that this topic has been brought up, is there any chance that we can set up an Eternal Warrior/Archer & Armstrong title to handle the similar flipbook situation there for EW #26 and A&A #26?

@Mark J. Castaneda  Any updates on this?  Eternal Warrior #26 and Archer & Armstrong #26 is exactly the same type of situation as Green Lantern #28 and Red Lanterns #28.  Thanks!

  7. You can't create a new media type AFAIK.  But you could, in theory, create new "titles" in any of the existing media categories.  So you could, for instance, create new titles for your Venus de Milo statue.  Or a single title for a particular series of statues that you are collecting, with each "issue" representing one of the statues in the set.

Because these won't be represented in the master database, there are a number of things that you can't do with your statue entries in ComicBase (for instance: track their values via the ComicBase weekly update, sell them on Atomic Avenue, or track them on the ComicBase app).

Also, if you have statues listed in your database that you haven't marked as being "in stock" (i.e., statues that you don't own), any weekly update will remove those listings depending on the settings you have checked off during the update process.  So if you are going to do something like this, it would be best to do it in a database that is separate from you comic collection database.

But, yes, what you are asking for *can* be done even if it isn't especially elegant.  (In fact, Pete likes to tell the story that there is apparently a university research lab somewhere that uses ComicBase to keep track of their vast insect collection.)

  8. Actually, this book is already double-listed in the database.  There is a note under the Red Lanterns title that "Issue #28 listed under the title Green Lantern/Red Lanterns #28".  And, indeed, there is a title Green Lantern/Red Lanterns in the database dedicated to handling this flipbook issue (it also contains a title note indicating "Serves as issue #28 for both Green Lantern (5th Series) & Red Lanterns".

But there is also apparently a listing for Green Lantern (5th series) #28 even though there is a title note for Green Lantern (5th series) stating that "Issue #28 listed under the title Green Lantern/Red Lanterns #28".  So it looks like Green Lantern (5th series) issue #28 should be deleted.

Unfortunately, I don't think that there is a way to handle this type of situation that would satisfy automated "collection hole" finders *and* not double count the flipbook issue.

Now that this topic has been brought up, is there any chance that we can set up an Eternal Warrior/Archer & Armstrong title to handle the similar flipbook situation there for EW #26 and A&A #26?

  9. This week's update added The Hobbit Illustrated (published by William Morrow in 2024) as a comic title.  Is this a new graphic novel version of the book or a re-issue of the David Wenzel graphic novel?  Or is this the prose novel with illustrations?  I am unsure, so a link to something here would be helpful in determining if this is a Comic or actually a Book.  My Google and Amazon searches come up with several hits of the prose book with illustrations published by Wm Morrow, but all of them are dated prior to 2024.

What is [-Viridae] ?  This was added as a comic title.  When I type this into the search bar on Atomic Avenue, the title shows up on the drop down selections, but clicking on the title takes me to this page (which in my browser is displaying an AA search result page listing the comic book titles E (Comicbox 2004) and V (DC, 1985-1986).  So if this is a real comic title, there is some necessary troubleshooting for the AA side of things at least.

  10. Comics for Ukraine was a Zoop crowdfunding project from last year.  Took a while, but it was eventually fulfilled... but it doesn't seem to have made it into the database.  So I finally sat down and got the data entered and submitted.  Some items to be aware of:

    •  There are four different covers.  I used the same A, B, C, and D designations as the indicia page.

    •  All four covers are available in hardcover format.  I submitted these as Book 1/A, etc.

    •  I know that covers B, C, and D are available as softcover, and I submitted those as regular issue 1/B, etc.  (It is possible that cover A exists as softcover, I just haven't been able to verify that)

    •  "Sunflower Seeds" shows up as a sub-title on the spine and on the back cover, so I entered that into the "Item Title" field.  IIRC, at one point the crowdfunding campaign used that title as well.  So depending on how persnickety you want to be re: the Item Title field, you might consider leaving that field blank.

    •  No publisher listed in the indicia.  I listed Zoop as the publisher, especially since they have copies of the book available for sale post-campaign.  Proceeds from the book go to Operation USA, but I don't think that they are an actual publisher whereas Zoop does publication services for the creators who use their crowdfunding platform.

    •  No cover price or UPC.  Listed cover price as $0.00 accordingly.  For the Price field, I used $60 for the hardcover versions and $40 for the softcover versions (these are the post-campaign prices as shown at the weblink above).

    •  Cover date:  I accidentally left this blank.  Based on the indicia page, the cover date should be 7/2023.

COMPLETISTS TAKE NOTE:  This anthology book includes short stories featuring American Flagg, Astro City, Chew, Grendel, Rocketeer, Scary Godmother, Star Slammers, and Usagi Yojimbo.

I see that the database includes one of the recent re-issues of Marvel Masterworks: The Amazing Spider-Man #2, but it is listed as #2/A (2nd print).  That issue should be deleted.

In keeping with our discussion above, the silver & black re-issue of that book should be MM:TAS-M #2/D and the marble variant re-issue of that book should be MM:TAS-M #2/E.  I will try to get those submitted in the next couple of days.

Ufda, time flies!  I finally got around to submitting this.  Please delete Marvel Masterworks: The Amazing Spider-Man #2/A (2nd print).  The silver & black new edition has been submitted as #2-D (somebody who has a copy should submit a scan and UPC) and the marble new edition has been submitted as #2-E (complete info including scan has been sent).

The issue is that the incentives do have a cover price listed. The crowdfunded books are initially only able to be purchased at a certain price.

However, I understand your reasoning, but I still prefer to have the crowdfunded books to have their cover price be what they were offered for.

My biggest concern here is that some variant comic books differ only by their printed cover price.  By assigning a cover price to a comic that doesn't actually have a cover price listed, we run the risk of a database user looking at their copy of Captain Crowdfunder #1 and seeing no cover price and seeing the Captain Crowdfunder #1 entry in ComicBase as having only a version with a $25 cover price.  User then proceeds to submit a new entry to ComicBase with $0.00 as the cover price.  If that correction entry is accepted, then all of a sudden you're looking at two entries in the database for the same thing.  I think it is an unnecessary burden on the CB editorial team to have to keep straight which crowdfunded comics actually have a $25 cover price and which ones cost $25 to get but didn't have any cover price printed on them.

There is a separate field in the database where users can enter the price that they paid for specific issues, and I would suggest that is the better place to put the crowdfunding platform price for those people who obtain the comic in that manner.

IMO the ideal would be for the cover price field to be an objective reflection of what the cover price is on the comic, not necessarily a reflection of what it cost to get the comic.  As a compromise, I suppose you could put the crowdfunder price in the Cover Price field *IF* something is added to the Notes field indicating there is no cover price on the issue.

The $25.00 cover price is because that is what it cost to get the book. Saying "pledge price" is misleading because you can pledge any amount and not get a book. You are basically telling the creator that if they print the book, you will pay the $25.00. That is the only price to get it. The aftermarket price can go up or down, but the initial cost is $25.00.

Cover price should be the price printed on the book. Otherwise you’re muddling the definitions of the Cover Price field and the Price field.

If there is no price printed on the book, then the contents of the Cover Price field should be $0.00.

is this philosophy different than how CB treats the Cover Price field for incentive variants?  I assume that for those comics CB still lists the printed cover price for that field rather than the initial cost to obtain the book.

  14. The Hunters (Paperfilms) lists four issues:  #1, #1/A, #1/B, and #1/C.  I think that #1 is a duplicate of #1/A based on the cover scans.  I recommend deleting issue #1 and keeping #1/A.

If you decide to delete #1/A and keep #1, I recommend changing the cover price from $25 to $0.  All of these issues have no cover price on them (this was a Kickstarter project).  The $25 reflects the pledge price (and therefore the Price field) but that is different from the Cover Price field.

I sent that in as a correction once. I don't know if it was ignored or reinstated.

Well, I do see that there are copies for sale on AA under both listings of the issue.  Somewhere along the line (as in, years ago on the original CB/AA message boards) I got the impression that an extra step behind the scenes was needed if sales had occurred for an issue that needed to be deleted from the database.  So maybe that is part of the explanation?

Gandhi  is also misspelled in this title entry.

You know, at first I thought that this book might be a duplication of the I Am Gandhi title that is already in the database, but apparently it is something entirely different.  Mycomicshop lists it a little bit differently.  If anybody on these boards has these books, can you check the indicia to see how they are actually titled?  A verification of the contents is also warranted, I think.  Mycomicshop calls this an "illustrated book" whereas CB lists it as a comic book.

Note that there is also a hardcover version of the Dial Books title.
